At a glance

London to Lugano by private jet takes about an hour and thirty-five minutes, Farnborough to Lugano, from around €8,500 one-way for the whole aircraft. Lugano is a valley airport with a 6.65-degree final approach — more than twice the standard angle and steeper than London City — flown only by crews specifically qualified for it, in aircraft certified for steep approaches. That is why the right equipment here is a Pilatus PC-24, a Pilatus PC-12 NGX or a Beechcraft King Air 350i rather than a conventional light jet, and we say so plainly. The reward is landing four kilometres from the centre of Lugano instead of driving up from Milan. About this route

London to Lugano in 1h 34m.

Lugano is banking, family offices and the Ticino lakes, and its airport sits four kilometres west of the centre — about fifteen minutes by car. Since the last airline left in 2019 the field has been pure general aviation, so the terminal and ramp are effectively private-traffic-only. It is one of the quietest arrivals in Switzerland, provided the aircraft can actually get in.

Getting in is the story. Terrain dictates a 6.65-degree instrument approach — a standard glidepath is 3 degrees, London City’s is 5.5 — and the airport runs a formal qualification regime: only crews specifically approved for Lugano, flying aircraft certified for steep approaches, may use it. Add a 1,420-metre runway and the honest equipment list is short. The PC-24 flies it as a jet; the PC-12 NGX and King Air 350i fly it as turboprops that give up little on a sector of this length. We place aircraft and crews that hold the qualification, not merely aircraft that look right on paper.

For larger parties or midsize-and-up cabins, the practical answer is Milan Malpensa with a road transfer into Ticino, and we will say so when it is the better plan rather than force the wrong aircraft onto the hill.

The timetable needs respect too. Lugano operates 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 20:00, with a hard midday closure and no movements after 20:00 unless an extension has been pre-arranged, at a surcharge and never guaranteed. There is no slot coordination — the constraints are the hours and the qualification, not the calendar.

One Swiss detail worth knowing: Switzerland is in Schengen, so there is no passport control from the UK leg’s Schengen equivalents or from EU departures, but it sits outside the EU customs union, so customs control of goods applies on arrival. The handler pre-arranges clearance; it costs minutes, not hours. A few days’ notice is usually enough on this route — the qualification requirement narrows the pool of aircraft, so earlier is better when dates are fixed.
